Lebanese Style Pita Bread: White or Whole Wheat

Pita bread is widely consumed in some Middle Eastern countries, especially in Lebanon. It requires few ingredients, but there is a negative point, this bread requires a lot of preparation time.

What is pita bread?

It’s a thin, round bread that we know mainly because it is used in kebabs to make the famous lamb meat gyros. The composition of this bread fluctuates slightly depending on whether it is made according to the Lebanese, Syrian, Turkish or Arabic recipe. It is made with white flour, baker’s yeast, salt, warm water and a little olive oil. It is often served as an accompaniment to Lebanese mezzés, with hummus or with grilled vegetables such as eggplants and peppers. Its very thick texture makes it ideal for sandwiches topped with white sauce.

The caloric value of a pita bread

On average, a 100-gram pita bread provides the body with around 275 calories. It provides the body with 56 grams of carbohydrates, including 2.2 grams of dietary fibre, 1.2 grams of fat, as well as potassium and sodium. Thus, if this bread is caloric, we can see that it is low in fat and provides almost no fat. For this reason, eating pita bread can be recommended before making a major effort such as an afternoon of sport or a long swimming session.

The advantage of pita bread is that it has a real satiating effect, which means that snacking can be avoided. If you like to eat soup at lunchtime, eating 100 grams of pita bread as a side dish can be a good tip to limit the risk of cravings in the afternoon. Another advantage of pita bread is that it is relatively dense and therefore requires good chewing before being swallowed, which facilitates the digestion process. It is therefore possible to consume pita bread during a diet if it is a small portion as a complement to a perfectly balanced meal.

Pita bread has a strong satiating effect which makes it interesting for a diet.
