Selecto Soda – the ‘coca-cola’ of Algeria
The Selecto soda is a drink of the brand Hamoud Boualem. It is a soda with apple essence, or rather with isoamyl acetate (banana flavouring). This drink is extremely popular in Algeria and is, along with Hamoud, the most consumed drink of the brand and has contributed greatly to its notoriety.
The drink was formerly called Victoria and was created in 1873 in Algeria. The change of name to Selecto soda was a choice of Hamoud Boualem, wishing to translate the taste of the drink by a very selective choice of products included in its design.
Selecto soda is often likened to an Algerian “Coca-Cola”, despite its radically different taste.
The drink is so successful in Algeria that it has been exported to France, the United Kingdom and Canada and is one of the very few drinks by Hamoud Boualem to have crossed the Algerian borders. In France, models that are not sold in Algeria have come out: Selecto apple and Selecto lemon. The French production of Selecto is ensured by an Algerian company: Parot.
