Roasted and salted peanuts
Peanuts are very popular in North America, whether they are plain, roasted or spread. Peanuts are often thought to be a nut, but in reality they are a legume just like beans. Peanuts are an excellent source of vegetable protein, although less complete than animal protein.
Peanut is on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s list of major allergens. Peanut allergy can be severe and a small amount can cause anaphylactic shock. People with peanut allergies should eliminate from their diet any products that contain peanuts or that are labelled as containing peanuts. They should also avoid peanut oil because it may contain protein particles, which are the cause of the allergy. In addition, it is considered prudent to avoid nuts in general (tree nuts and oilseeds) as these also have a high allergenic potential and are often handled and distributed by peanut companies.
