Nkui spice
Nkui spices are primarily used in the preparation of a traditional dish called nkui, originating from Western Cameroon. This dish is specially prepared to celebrate the birth of a child and is served to the mother. Nkui is a sticky sauce made from the bark of the Triumfetta pentandra plant and is seasoned with several local condiments including Ngachu’u, Lepka’ah, Diepse’eh, Zehfe, the bark of the lep, Susieu, and the fruits of the lep.
Nkui is renowned for its beneficial effects on nursing mothers, believed to make the breast milk abundant and facilitate its flow. Traditionally, it is known for its laxative effects on digestion, stimulating appetite, enhancing galactorrhea, and treating malaria and colic.
The dish is served with corn couscous and is traditionally eaten by hand due to the sauce’s sticky nature, which makes it challenging to consume with utensils.
